Important Cremation Decisions

Green or Natural Burial

Soller Baker is pleased to provide natural burials for our customers who wish to minimize impact on the environment. While green or natural burial is not regulated and no certification is required*, the guidelines of participating cemeteries must be met.

  • No embalming is allowed, so public viewing of the deceased is not available. With respect for the family and funeral guests, Soller Baker policy does not permit open casket services with natural burial. Closed-casket visitation and memorial services are available.
  1. While some funeral homes offer what they call an “eco-friendly embalming fluid,” the advocates of natural burial do not support this practice due to possible consequences during viewing.
  2. The goal of a natural burial is to return the body to the earth in a manner that does not inhibit decomposition. The body is prepared without chemical preservatives or disinfectants such as embalming fluid, as it contains formaldehyde or other active agents that destroy the microbial decomposers necessary to break the body down.
  3. Out of respect to our families and funeral guests, and in order to provide truly natural burial, we do not believe eco-friendly embalming to be a reliable alternative; therefore, Soller-Baker does not make it available.
  • The body may be buried in a biodegradable container or simple shroud. Natural burial does not allow a burial vault, as it would inhibit natural decomposition.
  • A natural burial may be less expensive than a traditional burial, although personal selections and cemetery charges will affect the total cost.
  1. Casket/burial container must meet cemetery regulations, and be made of biodegradable material.
  2. Because vaults/outer burial containers are not used, additional charges may be incurred from the cemetery.
* Some funeral homes claim to be approved by a council; however, there are no specific qualifications, with the only requirements being to include approved language regarding green funeral packages or services on the general price list, paying annual fees, and providing donations to support the council.
