Funeral Director and former soldier completes third degree at Purdue University’s College of Technology Statewide

Blanca AcevezWest Lafayette, IN, 2/4/09 – After serving nine years in the U.S. Army, and now a funeral director at Soller-Baker Funeral Home in Lafayette, Blanca Acevez has earned her third college degree, a Bachelor of Science in Organizational Leadership and Supervision. This degree from Purdue University’s College of Technology Statewide is in addition to two Associate of Science degrees. One is in Travel, Hospitality and Tourism from Robert Morris College in Chicago, and the other in Mortuary Science from Ivy Tech Northwest.

Arriving in Lafayette in August of 2005, Acevez has been at Soller-Baker since November of that year. She joined the staff as a funeral director and embalmer after completing the Indiana State required internship and professional licensing exam. Her practicum (clinical) hours were also completed at Soller-Baker.

Acevez enjoys helping and building relationships with the people of the Lafayette community and surrounding areas. “I also enjoy being the only female licensed funeral director and embalmer in Lafayette,” she explains, “along with providing assistance to our Spanish speaking families. It provides a certain sense of accomplishment, as well as setting us apart from other funeral homes.

Ron Diem, owner of Soller-Baker Funeral Homes, Inc. is proud of Acevez’s accomplishment. “Blanca is a tremendous asset to our team,” he said, “and I’m pleased that she has earned another degree. We encourage continued education, and Blanca provides an excellent example. She is one of the best and brightest in our industry, and has a knack for putting families at ease during difficult times.”

Of Soller-Baker Funeral Homes, Acevez says that she is honored to be a part of a firm whose staff is truly dedicated, has a low turnover rate, and exceeds the standard in industry services and practices.  Soller-Baker prides itself on the fact that special preparation is done by their licensed funeral directors and embalmers, and not outsourced as is becoming the trend.  She emphasized that professionalism, compassion, and integrity are of utmost importance to her when assisting with the families they serve.  “That’s why I love working here,” she said, “and because it doesn’t seem like work.”

Commencement will take place on May 9, 2009, during which Acevez will receive her degree.
