Soller-Baker to Host Medical Law & Ethics Students
Lafayette, IN, 04/15/09 – About 20 college and high school students will tour Soller-Baker Funeral Home in Lafayette on Tuesday, April 21, as part of their Medical Law and Ethics Class at Ivy Tech Community College.
Matthew O’Brien, a funeral director at Soller-Baker, will give the class a limited tour, and explain the services the funeral home provides for families in the community.
Rita Bulington, who teaches the class that will participate in Tuesday’s tour, explained, “Medical Law and Ethics covers the different aspects of medical care and the legalities involved.” The Soller-Baker event is part of a series that begins with a presentation regarding organ donation by Indiana Organ Procurement. During the tour, the students learn how organ donation, and how state and federal laws effect the funeral. Study of a unit about the grieving process follows.
The Medical Law and Ethics class is taken before the students enter their specialty training programs to become nurses, respiratory therapists, X-ray technicians, medical transcriptionists, and other professionals in the medical field. Guiding people through death and dying is vital part of medical care. “As professionals, these students will need to know how to care for patients and their families who are dealing with losses and grieving,” said Bulington.
Bulington, who had to leave the nursing profession due to vision loss, enjoys teaching students about this aspect of medical care. “Matt [O’Brien] is incredible. He just does a perfect job when we visit Soller-Baker. We were so lucky to find him,” said Bulington. “Caring for people who are in grief and dealing with losses is very close to my heart.”
